Alfred D. Maul
The Bridgeton Pioneer, Bridgeton NJ, January 31, 1884
Mr. Alfred D. Maul died Thursday night last, after a long and tedious illness. For years he had suffered terribly, and death came to him as a great relief. The greater part of his life, Mr. Maul spent in the boot and shoe business, and at one time he had the largest retail shoe trade in Bridgeton. In his line of business he had few superiors as a workman. He was an earnest, faithful and consistent member of the M. E. Church, and led the choirs of the Commerce Street and Central Churches for a long time. He was a great lover of music, so much so that he carried that love into the everyday walks of life. He was one of the founders and first officers of the Cumberland County Musical Association. In the Sunday School he led and taught the children in music and Scriptures. Few men possessed such a thorough knowledge of the Bible. Throughtout his long and useful life, Mr. Maul was highly respected and loved by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. In death he was sincerely mourned by a large gathering of people who followed his remains to Commerce Street M. E. Church, where the services were held. The church was filled with relatives, friends and Sunday School children. Several hymns, some of them favorites of the deceased, were beautifully rendered by the choir. Rev. E. C. Hancock preached an excellent sermon, appropriate to the occasion, from the text "What is Life?" The body was followed to the grave by the Odd Fellows society, and a large concourse of people.
