Salaries of TV Weathermen

TV weather forecasters are on-air personalities trained in meteorology. Duties are more complex than predicting rain or shine from National Weather Service reports. This job takes a special personality, along with an ability to analyze computer weather models to deliver meteorological news to viewers. In-depth knowledge of atmospheric pressure provides a foundation for understanding the future of weather patterns. Savvy networking and a lucky break are what it takes to become a well-known TV weather forecaster and local celebrity.

Job Description

TV weather forecasters work long days that go beyond the time you see them on the air. They prepare material for the weather news by studying weather data, reviewing models and designing graphics for TV broadcasts and online reports. Weather forecasters are usually responsible for posting the weather on social media and the TV station’s website. They often make community appearances to cultivate viewership. Schools invite TV weather forecasters to visit with children to educate them about the weather. If there is a developing weather situation, like a snowstorm or tornado, TV weather forecasters must stay beyond their shift to keep the public informed.

Education Requirements

TV weather forecasters typically earn a college degree in meteorology with a concentration in communications. Rooted in science and math, this academic program includes courses like satellite meteorology, forecasting, atmospheric dynamics, radar meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, thermodynamics and statistical climatology. Most programs include internships and other opportunities to practice practical, on-air skills. Some TV weather forecasters go on to graduate school to conduct research and learn advanced skills. In addition to a resume, students seeking a position as a TV weather forecaster must have a video resume to showcase their broadcasting and communication skills.

Industry

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the annual median pay in 2016 for meteorologists was $92,460, or $44.45 per hour. This figure is variable and is contingent on market size, location and shift assignment. In a small market, TV weather forecasters may make $35,000 for weekend evenings and a morning/noon shift. In a large market, the salary could be as much as $175,000. A chief meteorologist in a large market may make more than $400,000. A small number of TV weather forecasters make it to the big leagues of television. Most are lucky to break into a small market and remain there.

Years of Experience

Experience provides the opportunity to learn what the public wants from a TV weather forecaster. If you are a hit in a small market, you may have opportunities to move to larger markets across the country. Cultivating a following takes time. TV weather forecasters have only a fraction of the newscast to deliver information in a charismatic way. A large weather event could be your lucky break. If you happen to be covering a hurricane, tornado or snowstorm, delivering the play-by-play is a way to become known.

Job Growth Trend

Once you obtain your degree in meteorology, there is a wide variety of positions available. Jobs for meteorologists are expected to grow by 12 percent from now until 2026. These positions include working for the military, aerospace companies, laboratories and weather stations. The competition for TV weather forecaster positions is fierce. If you do land an on-air job, moving from market-to-market is common. Developing a fan base is key. This involves networking in the community, developing a unique, on-air personality, social networking and a willingness to pursue opportunities as they arise.
