Introduction And General Information | \==++====++====++====++====++====<<##0##>>====++====++====++====++====++==/ \==++====++==/ \==++====++==/ My name is Robert Allen Rusk and I am a hardcore gamer with about 30+ years of gaming experience. I am an ex-gametester (Broderbund Software, LucasArts Games, Point Of View Computing) and an ex-arcade attendant (Namco Cyberstation - Pier 39, San Francisco, CA). I also own multiple systems such as the Sega Dreamcast, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Atari Jaguar, PlayStation (1, 2, 3, and 4), Xbox, and Xbox 360. I started writing guides in 2003 because I felt it was something I could do utilizing my writing skills gained in college and gametesting along with my passion for vidgames. Over time I have honed my overall writing and organization skills plus my creative thinking skills. Additionally, I have extended the play value of the games I have written guides and FAQs for many times over plus I have received many letters from all over the world. I am also a member of the following forums: >>GameFAQs >>GamesX >>AtariAge >>Digital Press >>GTA Forums >>The MoFaT (a members only message board set up by "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" players who met on the Vice City message boards at GameFAQs). Outside of gaming, my interests include "Godzilla" (I have been a G-Fan since the age of ten) and "Red Dwarf". I am also a long time soundtrack collector with many titles in my possession. As far as favorite sports teams go, my teams are the San Antonio Spurs (NBA) [the local team], the Denver Broncos (NFL) [although I live in Texas, I am originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado] and the Air Force Falcons (NCAA Football). This guide was constructed using BBEdit Lite 6.1 and a Power Mac Workgroup Server 8550/200. It is now being maintained using TextWrangler on an Apple Mac Mini. I view my work in Safari to help in seeing how it would look on the web and correct format errors. For my guide work I have more than twenty memory cards for my PlayStation 2. Many of the memory cards are dedicated to "Grand Theft Auto III", "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" (Original Version (1.40)), "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" (which uses up fifteen cards), "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories", and "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories". These memory cards allow me to quickly go and try out new ideas (and modify old ones) when they occur to me or suggested by others. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN1. About The Guide | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ Welcome to my "Grand Theft Auto III" guide! If this is the first time you have visited then you will find a lot of useful information in a highly organized format that you can use to beat all of the missions of the game. Quotes taken from readers' e-mail are presented "as is" and may include spelling and grammatical errors. I also employ some creative writing in the chapter "Liberty City: 1998 to 2001" and in the tour guide sections. The main emphasis of this guide is to provide creative and simple solutions to many of the missions for "Grand Theft Auto III". Many hours were spent going over each mission and finding unique ways to solve them. I think you will be surprised by many of the solutions found here. I also reference the map/poster that comes with the game (there is also a map in the manual). Some of the location names come from that. I have worked hard to make sure that this guide is as complete as possible but at the same time leave room for exploration. I even included interesting and humorous anecdotes, observations and lines from GTA3. I hope that you enjoy this guide as much as learn from it. While this guide was written initially for the PS2 version of the game, it may also benefit those with the PC and Xbox versions of GTA3. If any of the strategies in this guide won't work in either the PC or Xbox versions then feel free to write me and let me know so I can make additional adjustments in future revisions. This guide is designed so that you can do the missions without any cheat codes. However, I have included one code, the Health Code (in "Advanced Tips And Information"), to give you a little flexibility because there are some areas, especially the Ambulance Mission, where you may wish to use it. Another emphasis of this guide is *ORDER*. If you do the missions and tasks in a certain order then the game will be easier and more fun for you. Although the guide follows more or less the traditional story order, there are ways to acquire more powerful weapons early in the game. The chapter "The Porter Tunnel Glitch" is the best way to get these weapons early plus allow you to do all of the side-missions prior to doing the Main Story Missions. Each Hidden Package, Unique Stunt Jump, and Rampage has a letter designation to make them easier to identify in this guide. In addition, there is a three letter Neighborhood Prefix (listings below) indicating a particular neighborhood or area where the item can be found (in these examples I use "XXX"): >>Hidden Packages will be identified with an "H". --Examples: Hidden Package [XXX-H21]. Package [XXX-H32]. >>Rampages will be identified with an "R". --Examples: Rampage [XXX-R4]. >>Unique Stunt Jumps will be identified with a "J". --Examples: Unique Stunt Jump [XXX-J24]. Grand Theft Auto III | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ "Grand Theft Auto III" is the successor to the moderately successful "Grand Theft Auto 2". The first GTAs used a top-down perspective and a complex control scheme that kind of made the game hard to get into. GTA3 put the main character in third person and the control layout made it easier to play. Rockstar made up a reasonably good story with real actors, like Joe Pataliano ("The Matrix", "The Sopranos") and Kyle Maclachlan ("Dune", "Twin Peaks"). They also made up a world where you can do just about anything at any time regardless of whether it was violent or not. The combination resulted in making GTA3 one of the most popular vidgames of all time. And set up a succession of titles that make up one of the most popular game series of all time. This also includes both "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories" and "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories" which filled in more details on their respective cities and histories. And continues all the way to "Grand Theft Auto V" which further expands and refines what was started with the first three games. With that said, let's get down to the business of the guide itself and I will start with the differences between the Original and Double Pack versions for the PS2..... /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN3. GTA3 Version Differences (PS2 Only) | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ After doing some closer examination of both my Original Version and Double Pack Version discs I concluded that there are no major differences between the Original, Greatest Hits and Double Pack versions of GTA3. Originally I thought that they had changed the requirements of the Ambulance Mission for the DP version but one of my readers, Dan Schauer, indicated to me that this was not so and I verified his information. More details on that in the Ambulance Mission portion of the guide. In addition, I placed my GTA3 discs in my Mac and opened up the file "system.cnf" in BBEdit Lite: BOOT2 = cdrom0:\SLUS_200.62;1 VER = 1.40 VMODE = NTSC This was the case for both the Original and Double Pack discs. This means that the Original and Double Pack are of the same version number (1.40). Since the Greatest Hits version came out before the Double Pack then this means that it is also version 1.40. If Rockstar had made any major changes to "Grand Theft Auto III" the version number would change (and the game saves from the new version would be incompatible with the old version). However, they did make a couple of tweaks without changing the major portion of the code and version number: 0===========================================================================0 | "Uzi" in the Original Version is now called the "Uz-I" (I use this | | alternate spelling in the guide). | |---------------------------------------------------------------------------| | One of the songs for Double Cleff FM, "O Mio Babbino Caro", was removed | | starting with the PS2 Double Pack. It is not on any of the Xbox versions | | either. It was probably removed due to expiration of the license required | | for it to be in the game, a problem that has plagued reissues of some of | | the other GTA games. Thanks goes to Blank Blank for that find. | 0===========================================================================0 /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN4. Technical Data | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ In this chapter I go over technical data on the various platforms and computers that "Grand Theft Auto III" has been released for and can be played on: 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 | A. PlayStation 2 |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\ 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 0========0 | Overall \ 0====================================================> The graphics for the PlayStation 2 version of GTA3 are pretty clean and the game runs very well with no sudden pop-ins or texture loading problems (when running off the DVD-ROM). The sound is pretty decent as well. 0====================0 | Xploder HDTV Player \ 0====================================================> Xploder HDTV Player is a disc that will allow PlayStation 2 owners to play most of their games in Progressive Scan mode. Many games will work but some of them will have issues. GTA3 works great in 480p mode. However, the main title intro will be a little glitchy because of "line meshing issues". This is because the intro is actually a "film" instead of using the game graphics. It is to my understanding that XHDTV doesn't handle film based stuff well and that results in the jittery looking intro. But this is actually a minor problem since you can easily skip the opening credits by pressing the X Button. After you get past the intro then all is good. Because the graphics are designed for 480 vertical resolution, it is not recommended that you put "Grand Theft Auto III" in any mode higher than 480p. The higher resolution modes, like 720p, simply shoehorn the 480 graphics into the higher end modes and tend to really squash the screen. 0=================0 | GS Mode Selector \ 0====================================================> This is a small program that is used with the memory card exploit known as Free McBoot. Like with HDTV Viewer you can also view games in progressive scan using this program. Unfortunately, this program does not work with this game. 0=========0 | HDLoader \ 0====================================================> This program, which has been floating around the internet for years, will let you install your favorite games onto a hard drive (assuming you have an older style PS2 "Fatty" (with a Network Adapter) or an early version of a PS2 "Slim" that has been modified to use a hard drive). There are two variants of this program. The first variant is HDLoader which is freeware and HDAdvance which is not. It is best to use HDLoader since it is free and gets updated from time to time to improve compatibility and functionality. HDLoader is best installed with a popular memory card exploit known as Free McBoot. GTA3, from what I know, has always been compatible with the earliest versions of HDAdvance and HDLoader. Why install the game on a hard drive? For starters, less wear and tear on the DVD-ROM mechanism (that is assuming if it still works - thankfully you can install games onto the hard drive from a PC as an option using a program called WiinHip). But mainly it is for faster loading speeds. Oddly enough, other than the fact that it takes less than five seconds for the game to load up to the logo screen from the game menu in HDLoader and the fact that the initial load is much faster, there is practically no speed difference in any given situation within GTA3. However, it is still nice to play it off the hard drive. But..... Before you start playing GTA3 off of the hard drive there is something *VERY IMPORTANT* you must do first. After installing the game onto the HDD, highlight GTA3 on the Game List menu and press SELECT. This will bring up the Game Compatibility Settings. It will look like this: Slow HDD access: No Disable DVD9 support: No Kill HDL After launch: No Date/timefix 2: No Date/timefix 3: No Disable network support: No Disable CzC patch: No Soul Calibur 2 / Suikoden V: No As you can see all of the default settings are set to "No". You need to make the following changes to make sure that GTA3 works perfectly with HDLoader: Slow HDD access: No Disable DVD9 support: No Kill HDL After launch: YES <---------- Date/timefix 2: YES <---------- Date/timefix 3: No Disable network support: No Disable CzC patch: No Soul Calibur 2 / Suikoden V: No Although I kill HDL as a precaution it is the timefix option that is most important. If you do not change this setting then, if you decide to make new game saves or overwrite an existing one, you will create a save with an incorrect time stamp that is also corrupted. It will use the date of January 1, 2000 at 00:00 instead of what your system clock has (this also happened with "Liberty City Stories"). But it isn't just that. Apparently HDL does something in addition to the incorrect time-stamp to do something that the game doesn't like. What will eventually happen is that when you go to pause the game you will crash the program. If you restart the game then the program will crash as it is loading up when it accesses the Memory Card. Interesting enough, if you do not make these changes, then you can still make game saves but only if you overwrite an existing one. Still, it is best to make these tweaks just to make sure nothing bad happens when playing GTA3. 0================0 | Open PS2 Loader \ 0====================================================> This program is meant to replace HDLoader and is more solid than HDL. You use this in place of HDL and it will recognize the HDD and all the games you have already installed. OPL, or "Opal" as I like to call it, has its own compatibility modes for games and won't recognize the settings used in HDL. Based on the time I have played GTA3 on Opal I found it to run just as smooth as it was on HDL. Unlike with HDL there are no timestamping issues to worry about so you can't make a corrupted game save. 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 | B. PlayStation 4 |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\ 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 In late 2015 Sony offered a new service on the PlayStation 4 called PS2 Classics in which PlayStation 2 games would be released and played on the PS4 through an emulator. The GTA Trilogy (GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas) would be some of the first titles released in this program. Although this doesn't sound that much different from what the PlayStation 3 offered there is one big difference: Trophies. You can now play PlayStation 2 games on the PS4 and earn Trophies for your Trophy List just like you can for the regular PS3 and PS4 games. This guide will cover how you can get all of the Trophies for this version of the game. As for the emulator, the game runs very well and looks great making the game look like the PC version (it has been made to render in 720p). However, it does stutter a little now and then and can stutter quite a bit depending on how much is going on at once. But that doesn't happen very often. One thing to note is that you cannot make virtual Memory Cards like you can on the PS3. This is mainly to prevent Trophy cheating but you can still make backups of your "card" for safe keeping. Finally, the emulator doesn't just emulate the main chips - it also emulates the DVD-ROM drive. This means that, even though the game is on the hard drive, if the game loaded slow on the original hardware then this version will load just as slow in the emulator. 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 | C. Original Xbox |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\ 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 0========0 | Overall \ 0====================================================> The graphics on the Xbox version are better than the PS2 version and animate very well. In addition, the Xbox version has greater draw distance and is much brighter than the PS2 version. Oh and let's not forget Progressive Scan (Component Video only) for the Xbox version. The sound quality is about the same between the PS2 and Xbox versions of GTA3. The Xbox version gets a slight edge due to its custom soundtrack feature. The controls on the Xbox version are OK even though doing drive-bys is a little awkward because you have to use the Right Analog Stick. The PS2 version gets the edge here because it is easier to do drive-bys with the L2 and R2 Buttons. However, GTA3 glitches out very bad if you happen to have an Xbox with a Thompson drive (I had to trade in my initial Xbox because of this problem). The best way to tell if you have the bad drive is when you load up the game. If you can hear the title music but the screen remains black then you have the bad drive. Microsoft used two other drives in addition to the Thompson drive and only a drive replacement will solve this particular problem. 0=============0 | Xbox Softmod \ 0====================================================> Like with the PS2, you can also modify the Xbox to allow for hard drive installation of games using a softmod. I've had one reader, Velid Sales, write to me about doing it to his Xbox and that GTA3 runs pretty well this way. At this time I have not softmodded any of my Xboxes but it is something I am considering doing in the future now that MicroSoft no longer has Xbox Live support for the Original Xbox. 0==========================0 | Original Xbox Differences \ 0====================================================> There are only a couple of differences between the PS2 and Xbox versions: 0=======================================================================0 | Catalina looks very different in the Xbox version. You can play GTA3 in many different resolutions depending on your monitor or HDTV setup. It looks and plays pretty good (although the main title intro chugs quite a bit). However, if you play it in 720p mode, then you may find that it slows down a little from time to time because the Original Xbox version was not meant to be played any higher than 480p. Three bad things about playing GTA3 on the Xbox 360: >>You can't do custom soundtracks like you could on the Original Xbox. >>You can't transfer game saves to an external memory card for safekeeping. >>You can't transfer games saves from the Original Xbox to the Xbox 360. But one good thing about playing GTA on the Xbox 360 is that the White and Black buttons (from the Original Xbox controller) are replaced by the Left and Right Buttons which are situated above the Left and Right Triggers on the Xbox 360 pad. Sadly, even if you use a USB-to-Xbox adapter, you cannot use an Xbox 360 controller with the Original Xbox. 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 | E. According to fellow Macintosh user John Fitzgibbons you can install the PC version of "Grand Theft Auto III" on the Mac and it will run with no issues under BootCamp. There is now a Mac version of the game available but it is actually the PC version that is made to work on the Intel Macs by using something called "wrappers". It may be best to track down the PC version and find a wrapper that is best suited to what version of OSX you have since I know that the official wrapped version of Vice City will not work on version OSX 10.8 and above. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN5. Claude Speed | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ In "Grand Theft Auto III" the main character is never mentioned by name (except as "Fido" by Maria Leone). Originally you were to have the option to name him just like you could in the first "Grand Theft Auto" game. But Rockstar decided to drop that idea so the main character went un-named. And most people on the gaming forums called him Fido (because that is what Maria Leone calls him later in the game) just to give him an identity. And, in earlier versions of this guide, I had given him another name: Alex. This was to identify him better within the guide and give him a little personality. However, in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas", the main character of GTA3 made an appearance as he hooked up with Catalina. And she called him Claude (although he didn't speak and she didn't use his last name). But Claude also appeared in "Grand Theft Auto 2" and his full name, as is listed in the credits in the game manual, is Claude Speed. I would later change this guide to accommodate this revelation. According to Austin Taft the name Claude also appears in the "american.gxt" file on the PlayStation 2 version of GTA3. It appears just before the main group of readable text (that starts with the line "Hey! Get back in the vehicle!"). Some people have suggested that the Claude character that was used in GTA2 is not the Claude that is in GTA3. In my opinion, that is correct. In my eyes, GTA3 is a reboot of the "Grand Theft Auto" series. As Rockstar restarted the series they recycled the city names from GTA1 (Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas) and the Claude Speed name from GTA2. Likewise, GTA IV is another reboot of the GTA series. As before, Rockstar has recycled the city names from the previous series and has also recycled the Lazlow character that has appeared in most of the GTA games plus the Claude Speed outfit that you can earn and wear. In addition, somebody named the_old_days posted this interesting tidbit about Claude's name over at GameFAQs: "So I was always interested in the protagonist of GTA III's name as Claude Speed. Most GTA veterans know that naming GTA III's protagonist Claude is a throw back to GTA 2's protagonist, but I thought there may perhaps be a deeper meaning behind the name "Claude Speed" and how it relates to GTA III. Claude is derived from Latin and literally means "lame" or "crippled", or basically disabled. As Claude in GTA III and San Andreas is apparently speech impaired, this name is obviously apt. I always thought that perhaps Claude had migrated to the GTA "USA", and perhaps never bothered to learn to speak the English language. The modern use of "Claude" as a name originated in post Latin (or, post-Roman) France. So Claude could very well be an immigrant from France and this could very well be the reason behind his apparent in-ability or un-willingness to speak as well. Though more likely he is from the UK, as breaking down his last name will show. Speed could directly relate to Claude's ability behind the wheel, as Catalina points out in San Andreas when she has Claude challenge CJ to a race. However, Speed as a last name has a deeper origin. Speed as a surname (or its variations Spede, Speyde, Speid, and Speede) has its origins in Saxon England, in Suffolk before the Norman Invasion. When the Normans invaded there was an eventual merger of the Saxon and Norman cultures. So, an individual named Claude Speed most likely is a result of a mash up of cultural names the occurred centuries ago in the UK after the Normans and Saxons finally assimilated into a unified culture (this assimilation is used generically, there are variations between Saxon-ism Norman-ism that exist in England/Britain to this day). Still, Claude Speed is mostly a modern day UK based name. Claude being brought by the Normans, and Speed already existing as a Saxon surname. So Claude Speed is most likely an immigrant from the UK. Since he most likely grew up in an English speaking culture before migrating to the "USA", he most likely is actually speech impaired. There you go." /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN7. They will chase you on foot and will smack you with their fists when close enough. They would rather not be chasing you but will be more than happy to bust you if you're stupid enough to let them. Hiding out somewhere for awhile will get rid of a 1-Star Wanted Rating. 0=======0 | 2-Star \ 0=====================================> Things get a bit more serious here. The number of Cops increase a bit and they will start shooting you instead of hitting you with their fists. 0=======0 | 3-Star \ 0=====================================> At this level a helicopter will start pursuing you and will shoot at you if you stand still long enough for it to do so. And the Police will get more aggressive in their pursuit of you. 0=======0 | 4-Star \ 0=====================================> Now the SWAT team joins in. They will try to blockade the road with their Enforcers in addition to everything else being thrown at you. This is the highest wanted level you can obtain while (officially) confined to Portland Island. 0=======0 | 5-Star \ 0=====================================> The FBI will now lend their assistance in hopes of bringing you down. They will ride in black FBI Cars and carry four agents, all packing AK-47's, and they are not afraid to use them. In addition, a second helicopter will join in tracking you down. The FBI Car is the only Police Vehicle that you can use in a Pay 'N' Spray. You can max out at 5-Star after completion of the mission "Last Requests". 0=======0 | 6-Star \ 0=====================================> After making mincemeat of the Police force, including the FBI, then the city will now call in the Army to deal with you. They will come in with Rhinos and trucks and will mainly try to kill you (but they will arrest you if the opportunity presents itself). The soldiers will kill you quickly with their M-16's and barely getting touched (while in a vehicle) by a Rhino will spell certain death. It will be quite difficult to survive at this level for very long. Advanced Tips And Information | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ Below are some tips and additional information that will be of benefit to you: 0================0 | The Health Code \ 0=========================================================> Even though you can do everything in this guide without the use of any cheat codes I felt that I should provide this one to give the user a little bit of flexibility. There are several areas of the game that can possibly frustrate gamers and this code can be of use there. There are also a few areas where I actually encourage its use (like the Ambulance Mission): >>[PS2] - R2 Button (x2), L1 Button, R1 Button, Left , Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up >>[Xbox] - Black Button, Black Button, Left Trigger, Right Trigger, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up >>[PC] - Gesundheit 0================0 | Quick Targeting \ 0=========================================================> When locking onto targets with a gun (like a Pistol) while holding down Target then you can use the Next and Previous Weapon buttons to switch targets. You can also let go of the Target button and quickly press it again to pick up another target (after you kill the previous one). 0===================0 | The Tank Gun Boost \ 0=========================================================> When you want to increase the speed of the often slow Rhino then rotate the Main Gun 180 degrees so that it faces the rear. Then fire the gun and keep firing. The gun recoil will then propel it forward. The faster you fire, the faster the tank will go. You can make the tank go very fast this way. But you will jack up your Wanted Ratings because you are usually destroying stuff behind you. According to reader Justin Castillo, this doesn't work well on the Xbox version because, when you rotate the turret, you also rotate the camera. While you can see what you are shooting at, you will not be able to see in front of the tank. 0================================0 | Perfect Quadruple Insane Stunt? \ 0=========================================================> One of the things GTA3 players like to do is to get the best Insane Stunt possible. The best I have done is a Perfect Triple Insane Stunt. This is about as high as most players have achieved. There was talk about whether or not you can do a Quadruple Insane Stunt but no one has ever reported doing one and everybody said that there is no such thing. But, while perusing the "american.gxt" file on the PS2 version (with the disc inside my Mac), I came across this listing of Insane Stunts: >>Insane Stunt >>Perfect Insane Stunt >>Double Insane Stunt >>Perfect Double Insane Stunt >>Triple Insane Stunt >>Perfect Triple Insane Stunt >>Quadruple Insane Stunt >>Perfect Quadruple Insane Stunt As you can see, there is a Quadruple Insane Stunt listed. But, since no one has ever reported doing one, then I have come up with two possibilities: One, that Rockstar took out the Quadruple rating (but left the text) or two, that the requirements for a Quadruple Insane Stunt are so high that no one has figured out how to get it yet. If anybody has managed to get either a Quadruple Insane Stunt or a Perfect Quadruple Insane Stunt then I'd like to hear about it and how you did it so I can put it in future revisions. 0===============0 | Stock-Up Trick \ 0=========================================================> If you have a bunch of Weapon Icons at your Portland Island Safehouse then you can quickly gain ammo for your weapons with this little trick. Open the garage and remove any vehicle inside (just park it nearby for now). Then pick up all of the Weapon Icons to increase your ammo, run all the way to the back wall of the garage and run out. You will see that all of the Weapon Icons have immediately regenerated. Repeat this until you have lots of ammo for your weapons. According to Josh Dady, this trick also works with the Police Bribes that spawn at your Safehouses. Then save your game, after re-parking your vehicle inside your garage, before resuming. 0=================0 | The Hooker Trick \ 0=========================================================> You can increase your health above 100 (up to 125) by picking up a prostitute (preferably with a four-door car) and driving her to a secluded place to do "business". Thanks to Antonino Giuseppe Cardinale, Jr. and Scotty Boutin for pointing out something that should have been in this guide from the start. According to reader Justin Castillo, you can also do this with convertible vehicles. Even though the car doesn't go up and down, you will still see a health increase. 0====================0 | The Elevated Tracks \ 0=========================================================> One of my readers, J Bush, pointed out that if you get a Wanted Rating and get onto the elevated tracks on Portland Island then you can gradually get the Wanted Rating down. This is because there is a Police Bribe on the tracks next to XXXMags and, if you stay on the train long enough, then you can gradually get the Wanted Rating down to nothing as you use the train as protection. Depending on how many stars you have this may take awhile since it takes some time for the Police Bribe to re-spawn. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN14. The Purple Nines Glitch (All Versions) | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ One of the most notorious bugs in the GTA series is one called the Purple Nines Glitch. This is a problem that has snared many an unwary gamer, including myself, since the PS2 version came out. Sadly, this problem was *NOT* fixed in the PS2 Double Pack version and even appears in the Xbox version though it is one of the most well known problems in the game. What is the Purple Nines Glitch? The glitch is related to the D-Ice missions in Wichita Gardens which become available in the latter half of the game. Most of the D-Ice missions involve the removal of a rival gang, the Purple Nines. When you first arrive at Wichita Gardens then you will see plenty of gang members roaming about. Some will wear red shirts (the Red Jacks) and some will wear purple (actually lavender) shirts (the Purple Nines). After the completion of the mission "Rumble" then you will effectively destroy the Purple Nines and from then on you will not see any Purple Nines roaming Wichita Gardens. You will see nothing but Red Jacks. The bug manifests itself when you decide to start a new game after completion of the mission "Rumble" using the New Game option in the Options menu. Naturally the game will reset everything, gangs, vehicle lists, Hidden Packages, and so on. Everything, that is, except the Purple Nines. For some reason that remains off. So, when you make your way back to D-Ice and do his first mission, "Uz-I Money", then there are no Purple Nines to be found - the game won't generate any. Therefore, it becomes impossible to complete the mission and you won't be able to access his other missions either thus denying you a chance at 100% Completion. How do you get around it when you want to start a new game? There are three ways. First, reload a saved game that is prior to "Rumble" and then do New Game. Second, is to keep your first saved game, right after the mission "Luigi's Girls", in one slot and never overwrite it. Then, if you want to start a new game, simply load up this saved game and play anew. And third, thanks to Fred Chagnon, is to load up the game with no memory card in the slot. After loading up the game, which will start anew because there was no memory card in the slot to load up a saved game, then you can put in your memory card to save any new games you come up with. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN15. After he arrives in Liberty City then he begins an journey that will eventually bring Liberty City under Leone control and bring peace to the local criminal underworld. Temporarily, at least..... 0===================0 | Liberty City: 2001 \ 0=====================================> A ruthless small time criminal, and our "hero", Claude Speed, is involved in a robbery with a couple of accomplices at the Liberty City Bank. As they make their getaway, with Claude trailing, then a gunshot is heard. The woman, Catalina, has killed one of the accomplices and now has her sights on Claude. She shoots Claude, leaving him for dead but he survives. Unfortunately, for Claude, he is put on trial and sent to prison for ten years. As Claude is being transferred to Liberty Penitentiary then the prison van is ambushed while on the Callahan Bridge. It appears that one of the other prisoners is being rescued by a group of Columbians. However, Claude and another prisoner, 8-Ball, take advantage of the situation and manage to free themselves. As they set themselves free, a bomb, that was thrown onto the bridge by the Columbians, explodes. This leaves a huge gap in the bridge and destroys most of the vehicles on it. Now begins the first mission of the game, "Give Me Liberty", a simple driving mission to a little Safehouse in the Red Light District of Portland Island. This also serves as simple tutorial to the driving and map mechanics. You can collect Hidden Packages (to gain Weapon Icons for your Safehouses) and do Unique Stunt Jumps while driving around during "Give Me Liberty". But you can't do Rampages or any vehicle based side-mission. Just park the Kuruma (with 8-Ball inside) and jack another car to do other stuff. When you are finished then go back to the parked Kuruma and go to the Safehouse. When you arrive at the Safehouse then your new friend, 8-Ball, tells you to go to a place owned by a guy named Luigi. You can't save your game yet so go to Luigi's. When you arrive at Luigi's then you start the mission titled "Luigi's Girls". After a brief introduction then Luigi tells you to get one of his girls from the clinic. This is nothing more that a simple pick-up mission. Take the car, drive over to the hospital, pick up Misty and drive her back to Luigi's club. You will then earn $1,500 for mission completion. If you own the PS4 Version then you should also get the {First Day on the Job} Trophy. Now let's go west to the street, jack a vehicle, and turn right at the nearby three-way intersection then stop at the next three-way intersection. At the northwest corner of this intersection you will see the wall for: >>Doorless Apartments (West) ************************** Location: (West) Hepburn Heights. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: A couple of large apartment buildings situated behind a tall wall that goes around them. They are called the Doorless Apartments because there are no entrances on either building! I wonder how people get in and out of this place..... Bought out the troubled Fidl store chain a couple of years back. As you continue southeast then you will take another curve that angles south. Right after this curve then you should see the entrance to Portland Docks to your left. Go left through the entrance and you should find a large building with several garage doors. And this is the: >>Garage Building *************** Location: (Central) Portland Harbor. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This large building is east of the entrance to the Portland Docks area. It has an overhang and seven garage doors. Continue past the Garage Building then turn left. Go forward until you run into a warehouse building. And this building is the: >>Industrial Import Export Garage ******************************* Location: (North) Portland Harbor, north of the Garage Building. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is where you will be doing one of three car collection missions during the course of the game. Directly east of this building is a large group of container crates and an area with dark yellow diagonal stripes on the ground. And this area is the: >>Emergency Vehicle Crane *********************** Location: (North) Portland Harbor, northeast of the Garage Building. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is where you will be doing the second of three car collection missions during the course of the game. From here, head back out of the entrance to Portland Docks and turn left. Follow the road curve going southwest then stop at the next four way intersection. At the south corner of this intersection is the: >>Portland Island Bus Station *************************** Location: Trenton. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is the major bus station for Liberty City. However, due to the damage to the Callahan Bridge, it is temporarily closed until further notice. Turn right and go forward from here then stop at the next four-way intersection. At the north corner of this intersection is: >>Bitch 'N' Dog Food ****************** Location:(Northeast) Trenton. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Took over the building from the Don Kiddick's Sausage Factory not too long ago and converted the place to process dog food. And at the west corner of this intersection is: >>Joey's Auto Painting ******************** Location: (Central) Trenton. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This place handles car repair and painting. It is also owned by Joey Leone, son of Salvatore Leone. From this intersection, turn right then turn left at the road curve. Just before you get to the next road curve, you should see off to your right: >>Mean Street Taxis ***************** Location: (Northeast) Trenton. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: One of two taxi companies that operate in Liberty City. You can find a Cabbie here to do the Taxi Mission. After that, follow the next road curve and turn left at the next three-way intersection. Go through the next two four-way intersections and follow the road curve going west then stop at the next four-way intersection. Now turn left and go onto the road that runs parallel to the one you just came off of. After following the road curve then you will be heading west. And, as you go along this road, then you should see off to your left: >>The Warehouses ************** Location: (South) Atlantic Quays. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: A group of four large warehouses. After this then follow the road curve and stop at the next four-way intersection. At the southeast corner of this intersection is the: >>Liberty City Sawmills ********************* Location: (South) Trenton, next door west of the Portland Island Bus Station. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Outside of the Red Light District this is the biggest wood producer in Liberty City and nearby regions. From this intersection, turn left and just after doing that then you should see a dirt road off to your left. This road will lead you to the: >>The Turtle Head Fishing Co. *************************** Location: (Southeast) Callahan Point. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This walled and gated area is rumored to be the main drug factory for the Triads. As you get to the road curve going north, and under the Callahan Bridge, then you should see off to your right: >>Greasy Joe's Diner ****************** Location: (West) Callahan Point. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: They took the building over from Rusty Brown's Ring Donuts when they restructured and pulled out of Liberty City. Still remains a popular Cop hangout. After that, go under the Callahan Bridge and turn right at the next intersection. Go forward and follow the road curve going left then stop at the next three-way intersection. At the southeast corner of this intersection is: >>Chinatown Park ************** Location: (South) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: A nice place to relax or to play a game of basketball on the courts. From here, turn right and stop at the double intersection. At the southwest corner of this intersection is the: >>Old School ********** Location: (Southeast) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: One of the oldest schools in Liberty City. Can be rented for parties. Now go forward from this double intersection and follow the road curve going north. Then stop at the next three-way intersection. At the northeast corner of this intersection is: >>Sweeney General Hospital ************************ Location: (West) Portland View. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is where you will be if you end up getting Wasted while on Portland Island. And at the southeast corner of this intersection is the: >>Portland View Police Station **************************** Location: (West) Portland View, next door south of Sweeney General Hospital. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is where you will be if you end up getting Busted while on Portland Island. From here, turn left and then stop at the next three-way intersection. At the north side of this intersection you will find the south end of the Chinatown Shortcut. At the southwest corner of this intersection you will find the Punk Noodles restaurant. At the west and south side of this place is a very short road. At the road curve of this short road you will find the east entrance to the: >>Chinatown Plaza *************** Location: (Central) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is the major marketplace for Chinatown. Lots of good bargains can be found here. From this intersection, turn left and go forward past Punk Noodles then turn right at the next three-way intersection. As you go forward then you will pass by the south entrance to Chinatown Plaza (to your right). Then go through the next four-way intersection and stop at the next three-way intersection. At the southeast corner of this intersection is the: >>China Building ************** Location: (Southwest) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This colorful building, with a large Rockstar billboard on top, has an L-shaped alley and a set of stairs to access the roof. From here, turn right and go forward through the next three-way intersection. As you go to the next three-way intersection then you should see off to your right: >>Mr. Wong's Launderette ********************** Location: (West) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: The best place to get your clothes clean. "If it ain't Wong, it ain't white!" After this then head through the next three-way intersection and stop at the next three-way intersection. At the north side of this intersection, above the street, is the walkway that leads to the: >>Chinatown El-Train Station ************************** Location: (West) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: One of three train stations for the elevated track that goes around Portland Island. And at the northeast corner of this intersection is: >>Raffles Fish Factory ******************** Location: (West) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: These two large Chinese styled buildings, located where the walkway leading to the Chinatown El-Train Station ends, is where Chinatown does all it's fishy business. Go through the next three-way intersection then stop at the next three-way intersection. At the south side of this intersection is the: >>Chinatown Subway Entrance ************************* Location: (North) Chinatown. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is the only entrance for the Liberty City Subway System for Portland Island. There are twelve different weapons that can be found and used to create mayhem and abuse. The description of the weapons and items are listed in this chapter and their locations revealed in each major area of Liberty City. The information on each weapon is broken down as follows (if applicable): ++Appears after: This tells you what mission you have to complete before this weapon can be bought from Ammu-Nation or other locations. ++Cost: How much the weapon costs and where to purchase it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ++Notes: Information on the weapon. <0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+<<##0##>>+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0> >>Fist **** Good for hands-on fisticuffs when you need a little money (or just to open a can of Whoop-Ass on some poor soul). >>Baseball Bat ************ Great for batting practice (on somebody's head) or breaking kneecaps. This weapon is available at all Safehouses at the beginning of the game. >>Pistol ****** Appears after: Pump-Action Pimp. Cost: $250 - Red Light District Ammu-Nation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: A decent handgun that can be bought from Ammu-Nation or acquired from dead Cops. You can use this while running to make yourself harder to hit while taking down someone at the same time. >>Uz-I **** Appears after: Cipriani's Chauffeur. Cost: ++$800 - Red Light District Ammu-Nation. ++$800 - Newport Ammu-Nation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: One of the better weapons here as it has a good rate of fire and accuracy. Like with the Pistol, you can aim and run at the same time while using this weapon. >>Shotgun ******* Appears after: Arms Shortage. Cost: $1,500 - Phil Cassidy's Army Surplus. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Just a standard pump action single barreled shotgun. Slow on the fire rate but still effective. Perhaps too effective, especially against cars. This is almost as powerful as a Rocket Launcher when shooting up vehicles. However, you run slowly while holding this weapon thus making you vulnerable to Cops, pissed-off gang members, and pedestrians. >>AK-47 ***** Appears after: Last Requests. Cost: $3,000 - Newport Ammu-Nation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This powerful machine gun will make mincemeat out of anybody in your way. Like with the Shotgun, you also run slowly while holding one. >>M-16 **** Appears after: Arms Shortage. Cost: $5,000 - Phil Cassidy's Army Surplus. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This has a very fast rate of fire but your sight will jump all around the screen. Good for quick work once you manage to compensate for the unsteadiness of the gun-sight (you have to hold Target to properly aim the weapon). This is another heavy weapon that slows you down when you try to run with it. >>Sniper Rifle ************ Appears after: Last Requests. Cost: $10,000 - Newport Ammu-Nation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This fires one shot at a time and reloads slowly but it is effective. Use Target to manually aim the weapon and use the Zoom In and Zoom Out controls to help find and track your targets. >>Rocket Launcher *************** Appears after: Arms Shortage. Cost: $25,000 - Phil Cassidy's Army Surplus. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This very destructive weapon is the most powerful in the game. Use Target to aim and Attack to shoot. Don't be too close to your target though - you can hurt yourself badly in the process. This heavy weapon will make you run very slowly while holding it so care must be taken when wielding it. >>Flamethrower ************ Appears after: A Drop In The Ocean. Cost: $25,000 - In an un-numbered garage at the back of the Pike Creek Police Station. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is a very powerful weapon that can clear an area quickly of enemies. This is also true of vehicles including the Rhino tank since this is pretty much one of the few weapons that can destroy it. >>Molotovs ******** Appears after: A Drop In The Ocean. Cost: $2,000 - In an un-numbered garage at the back of the Pike Creek Police Station. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Can be used to flambe' your enemies and yourself if you're too careless in where you throw one since you don't have as much control over it like you do with the Flamethrower. This is also a weapon that can be used to destroy the Rhino. >>Grenades ******** Appears after: Last Requests. Cost: $2,000 - Newport Ammu-Nation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Toss one of these and watch the crowds scatter (in more ways than one)..... 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 | A.
